The High Court (HC) today stayed the Election Commission gazette that declared Awami League candidate Md Abdul Hai in Jhenaidah-1 constituency elected in the recently-held parliamentary election.

“Admit and stay for two months,” said the order passed by a High Court division bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman. The court came up with the order after holding hearing on an Election Petition filed by independent candidate Nazrul Islam.

Advocate Mujibur Rahman moved the plea before the court.

Md Abdul Hai was declared winner as he bagged 94,379 votes, while his closest rival Nazrul Islam got 80,547 votes in the January 7 election. Nazrul filed the election petition, accusing Hai of violating election code of conducts.
