HC wants list of registered, unregistered GI products

The High Court (HC) today ordered authorities concerned to submit list of products already registered as Geographical Indications (GI) and those required to be registered in home and abroad.

A High Court division bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir passed the order after holding hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.

The court also issued a rule asking officials concerned including industries, the commerce secretary, agriculture secretary and cultural affairs secretary to explain in four weeks as to why it shall not declare their failure in preparing the list and register the GI products as illegal.

It set March 19 for submitting compliance report in this regard.

Barrister Sarwat Siraj filed the writ, pleading for court’s direction for preparing a list of all GI products of Bangladesh.
