Rescue operation called off

Authorities on Monday evening called off the operation to rescue the injured and recover the bodies of the dead following a jet crash at the Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka.

The mission was reportedly wrapped up at 7.30pm. Earlier, at 1.06pm, a training aircraft of Air Force crashed shortly after take-off. The nose of the plane pierced the staircase of the school building while the two wings tore through the classrooms on either side of the stairs.

The two classrooms were reportedly packed with first-graders.

Nine units of the Fire Service brought the fire under control at 2.25pm, paving the way for rescue operations.Along with the Fire Service, Army, Air Force, BGB, and other agencies joined the rescue operations.

45 patients suffer at least 70% burn injuries: Uttara Adhunik Hospital official

Around 45 patients brought to the Uttara Adhunik Medical College Hospital sustained burn injuries to at least 70% of their bodies due to the aircraft crash at Milestone College, prompting hospital authorities to refer them to the national burn institute. Some suffered as much as 80% burn injury, SM Rakibul Islam, assistant director at the hospital, told the Daily Sun.
