Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), hailed Chattogram as a historic city of rebellion that has enriched Bangladesh through the ages.
Speaking on Sunday (July 20) at a public rally in Biplob Udyan near Gate 2, following a march from Kaptai Road through Bahaddarhat and Muradpur, Nahid vowed not to surrender Chattogram to a few mafia groups. He stressed that all residents across Bangladesh’s 56,000 square miles deserve their rightful rights. His vision is to build Chattogram as a city rich in languages, religions, and cultures.
Nahid warned of conspiracies targeting Chattogram, with foreign powers eyeing the city. He declared Chattogram integral to national security and sovereignty, and pledged that any threat would be met with united resistance across Bangladesh.
He criticized the city’s poor urban management, water supply problems, and decline caused by looting and mafia control, calling for a complete revival of Chattogram — the economic lifeline of the country. The NCP is committed to strengthening the city.
NCP Secretary Akhtar Hossain condemned the politics of corruption, highlighting how money is funneled abroad under the guise of infrastructure projects. He stressed transparency and vowed that extortion and tender corruption would not be tolerated in a new Bangladesh.
Southern Chief Organizer Hasnat Abdullah praised Chattogram’s courageous people and youth who have challenged the status quo. He called for a policy-driven, justice-based government and urged unity against attempts to sow division. “Bangladesh belongs to its people, not any individual or dynasty,” he said.
Recalling history, he noted that whenever Bangladesh faltered, Chattogram stood firm. “Youth resistance shapes history, as shown by the July 2024 mass uprising.”
The rally attracted activists from across Chattogram’s districts, who marched to Biplob Udyan chanting slogans like “Leaving Bengali is abandoning our roots,” “Down with Mujibism, long live revolution,” and “The blood of my brothers will not go in vain.”
NCP leaders including Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, Northern Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam, Joint Secretary Tasnim Zara, and Senior Joint Convener Samantha Sharmin were present on the occasion.
