The Bangladesh Army has confirmed preliminary evidence of political involvement by Major Sadekul Haque Sadek in a conspiracy linked to the then ruling party Awami League, triggering a formal military investigation, according to a statement released Friday by the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR).
In a statement issued Friday, the ISPR said that Major Sadekul Haque Sadek was detained from his residence in Uttara, Dhaka, on July 17, following allegations of his involvement in a political plot organized by the outlawed Awami League and its affiliates. The army has since launched an internal investigation and confirmed the initial validity of the claims.
“A military tribunal has been formed to conduct an impartial investigation,” the statement read. “If found guilty, the officer will face disciplinary action under existing military laws and regulations.” A separate tribunal has also been established to examine his unauthorized absence from duty.
The ISPR emphasized that the Bangladesh Army is a non-political, disciplined, and professional institution with no tolerance for political activities by its personnel. Coordination is ongoing with police and other law enforcement agencies to pursue legal actions as necessary.
The development follows widespread public discussion after Amar Desh published a report on July 28 titled “Awami League Plots Nationwide Sabotage,” alleging secret political planning by the banned party. Subsequent law enforcement actions led to the arrest of 16 individuals, including Major Sadek, for allegedly conducting paramilitary-style training sessions disguised as workshops.
Authorities claim the sessions involved over 400 cadres from the outlawed Awami League and its student wing, Chhatra League, who were reportedly being prepared for subversive activities. According to investigators, Major Sadek played a key role in organizing and overseeing the training.
The ISPR reiterated that any breach of military code involving political engagement will be dealt with firmly, in keeping with the army’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and constitutional responsibility.-Source Daily Observer.
