At least 39 Bangladeshis, who have been expelled from the United States (US) for illegal stay, have arrived in Bangladesh.

The Bangladeshi nationals reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Saturday morning (2 August), according to the Immigration Police.

Earlier, a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had said on Friday (1 August) that 61 Bangladeshi nationals were scheduled to be deported aboard a US military aircraft.

However, only 39 individuals ultimately arrived in Bangladesh, according to media reports.

According to the ministry sources, the deportations are part of a broader crackdown on undocumented immigrants that began under the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Since then, citizens from various countries who were found to be residing illegally have been sent back to their countries of origin. Bangladesh continues to experience such deportations every month.

The source added that, over time, the United States has returned a total of 118 Bangladeshi nationals in similar circumstances.
