Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday called for national unity to build a just and corruption-free Bangladesh where tyranny can never return, marking the first anniversary of the July Uprising’s victory.

In a statement issued on July Uprising Day, Prof Yunus said, “July rekindled our hope — a hope for a just, equal, and corruption-free Bangladesh.” He urged all citizens to protect the hard-won gains of the movement and resist any effort by former autocrats or their allies to undermine national progress.

“Let us stand united beyond all divisions to confront and defeat these threats,” he said. “Together, we will build a Bangladesh where tyranny will never rise again.”

Reflecting on the events of August 5 last year, Prof Yunus described the triumph of the uprising as a “historic achievement” that freed the country from 16 years of authoritarian rule.
He paid tribute to the youth, workers, professionals, and others who died during the uprising, calling them “martyrs of democracy” and vowing that their sacrifice would not be forgotten. “My profound respect goes to every martyr of the uprising… The nation shall forever honour their sacrifice,” he said.

Prof Yunus said the July Uprising was not merely a protest but “a collective eruption” against oppression and a movement for a new, people-centric system.
Since the formation of the Interim Government, he noted, significant reforms have been launched across state institutions in line with the uprising’s goals. Trials related to the July killings are progressing, and efforts are underway to preserve the memory of the martyrs and rehabilitate the injured.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to dialogue with political stakeholders to achieve long-term democratic reforms, including electoral and political system restructuring.
“The Interim Government is committed to restoring state power to the people through a peaceful, fair, and transparent election,” Prof Yunus concluded.
