UTN demands DU proctor quit over war criminals row

University Teachers’ Network (UTN) has demanded resignation of Dhaka University (DU) Proctor and unconditional apology from Islami Chhatra Shibir following display of convicted war criminals’ photographs during first anniversary celebrations of July Uprising at TSC grounds on Tuesday.

On Wednasday, UTN condemned incident as “national insult,” stating Shibir showcased photos of 1971 Liberation War collaborators instead of honouring martyrs. “Celebrating July by showcasing photos of genocide convicts is disgrace to this university,” Teachers’ Network declared in Wednesday statement.

Controversy escalated when proctorial office failed to take immediate action despite heavy social media criticism. Photos were removed only after student organisations’ resistance, with assistant proctor arriving to mediate between opposing groups. Videos later showed individuals portraying student protesters as mob, leading to direct confrontations.

Incident raised serious security concerns when man was caught filming inappropriate close-up videos of protesting female students. Individual, identified as active Shibir member from Chaumuhani Kachua group, had unauthorised entry despite restricted access and ID checks on 5 August.

UTN cited multiple administrative failures over past year, including Tofazzal and Shammo murders, Sheikh Hasina graffiti erasure, Faculty of Fine Arts arson and unaddressed sexual harassment complaints as evidence of ineffective leadership.

They presented five key demands: Shibir’s unconditional apology with pledge against war criminal rehabilitation, university administration’s apology with clear prevention directives, immediate proctor resignation, punitive measures against online women harassment and permanent steps to preserve Liberation War history including “Smriti Chirantan” memorial protection.
