Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed its support for proposed February general election and called for adopting Proportional Representation (PR) voting system in both the upper and lower houses of parliament.

Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher on behalf of the party conveyed its position during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters at Election Commission headquarters following the meeting, Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said his party has no objection to the election being held in early February.

“Jamaat-e-Islami welcomes the plan to hold the next election in the first half of February,” he said.

Dr. Taher reiterated the party’s interest in participating in the polls but stressed that fairness must be ensured.

“Our demand is clear; we want elections and intend to participate. But we place high importance on making the election fair. Therefore, Election Commission’s recommendations for electoral reforms must be legally enacted and implemented,” he stated.

The Jamaat leader also called for the adoption of PR (Proportional Representation) system for both the upper and lower houses of parliament.

“We’ve already agreed in principle on implementing PR system in the upper house. But our demand is for both houses and we’ll continue advocating for this reform,” he added.

Dr. Taher also mentioned that he had raised a separate issue with CEC; requesting that the boundaries of Cumilla-11 constituency be kept unchanged.
