Metropolitan Magistrate Minhajur Rahman granted the extension after Additional Superintendent of Police Md Azizul Haque of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the current investigation officer, informed the court that the probe remains incomplete.
Eight suspects remain in the case, including Tanvir Rahman, a friend of Meherun Runi, and Enam Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir, the security guard of the couple’s apartment. All have been repeatedly remanded, but no confessional statements have been recorded so far.
Sagar, news editor at Maasranga Television, and Runi, senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were found stabbed to death in their West Rajabazar apartment in Dhaka on the morning of February 12, 2012, after being attacked the previous night.
The case has seen no conclusive progress despite being investigated by multiple agencies—starting with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police, then handed over to the Detective Branch (DB), and later to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
In September 2024, the High Court intervened, dissolving RAB’s involvement and ordering the formation of a high-powered four-member task force led by the PBI chief, directing it to complete the investigation within six months.
That deadline has now been missed, and the probe continues without a breakthrough. The endless delays have drawn sharp criticism from journalist unions and human rights organizations, who describe the case as a symbol of impunity and investigative failure. Over 13 years on, the quest for justice for Sagar and Runi remains unfulfilled.
