Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday handed over the ownership deed of a three-katha plot in Purbachal to Mahir Sarowar Megh, son of the murdered journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

The formal handover took place at Jamuna State Guesthouse in Dhaka this afternoon.

Sagar Sarowar, former news editor at Maasranga Television, had applied for the plot in 2004 and was allotted the land by RAJUK (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha) in 2005. Despite completing all payments by 2009, the family was denied the deed for over 15 years due to prolonged administrative delays under the previous Awami League government.

The legal heirs to the property are Sagar’s mother, Saleha Monir, and his son, Mahir Sarowar Megh.

During the ceremony, Dr Yunus inquired about the status of the investigation into the Sagar-Runi murder case and expressed deep concern over its protracted timeline.

“Such prolonged delays in delivering justice create public frustration and undermine confidence in the legal system,” he said, directing the concerned authorities to expedite the investigation and bring it to a swift conclusion.

Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan revealed that the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), now leading the probe, has reported the loss or destruction of crucial evidence due to years of inaction and mishandling.

In a touching moment, Megh presented Professor Yunus with a personalized jersey and a bag of his own design as a token of gratitude.

The event was attended by several senior officials and advisers, including Education Adviser Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Dr. Farida Akhter, Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md Riazul Islam, and Meherun Runi’s brother, Nawazesh Alam Roman.

The long-delayed transfer of the deed has brought a measure of relief to the bereaved family, symbolizing both recognition of their rights and a step toward administrative accountability.
