Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday declared that Bangladesh is prepared to hold its next general election in the first half of February 2026, saying the nation has achieved stability following last year’s student-led uprising and political unrest.

“Now, we are ready for another transition in our political history. The country has come to this stable enough and ready to have the election. So, we announce the election in the first half of February 2026. The interim government will be replaced by an elected government,” Yunus said.

He made the announcement while addressing the international conference “Stakeholders’ Dialogue: Takeaways to the High-Level Conference on Rohingya Situation” at Hotel Baywatch in Cox’s Bazar, home to over one million Rohingyas.

Recalling the turbulent events of 2024, the Chief Adviser said, “One year back, we have gone through a killing spree, followed by a student-led uprising to free the country from the fascist regime.”

Turning to the Rohingya crisis, Yunus stressed that Bangladesh’s democratic transition should also lead to a solution for the displaced community. “It will be complete when we see we have also achieved this goal, to have all our Rohingya guests return to their own home in their own environment,” he noted.

At the conference, Professor Yunus presented a seven-point proposal urging stronger international action to secure justice, repatriation, and stability for Rohingyas.

The three-day dialogue, inaugurated Sunday, brought together diplomats, UN officials, academics, Rohingya community representatives, and leaders from BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party (NCP). High Representative for the Rohingya Issue and National Security Adviser Khaliur Rahman delivered the welcome address, while Disaster Management Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, and UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner Raouf Mazou also spoke.

The conference will conclude tomorrow with recommendations for the upcoming high-level meeting on the Rohingya crisis.
