A viral video circulating on social media falsely claimed to show Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haq Nur being beaten during Friday night’s clash in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar. Fact-checking platform Rumor Scanner confirmed on Saturday that the victim in the video was not Nur.

The footage showed a man in a red or brown T-shirt assaulting another person sitting on a staircase. Many users misidentified the victim as Nur and shared the clip as evidence of the attack on him.

Rumor Scanner stated in its Facebook post that multiple live streams and videos from the scene proved Nur never sat on the staircase during the clash. Instead, joint forces attacked him with batons on the street, causing him to collapse. Activists later carried him away and rushed him to the hospital on a rickshaw.

The platform further reported that the man in the viral video might be a police officer. In other footage, security personnel scolded and questioned the individual, who claimed to be a policeman. At one point, he was even seen wearing a police helmet. Rumor Scanner said it would continue verifying the man’s identity.
