Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has firmly stated that there is no alternative to holding elections in Bangladesh, warning that entertaining any other option would be “deeply dangerous” for the nation.
Speaking at a series of meetings with political parties on Sunday (31 August) night, the Chief Adviser reiterated his commitment to hold polls in early February.
Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed reporters after the meetings, saying, “The election will be held within the timeframe announced by Chief Adviser — in the first half of February — in a free, fair, and festive environment. He once again assured all political parties of his pledge.”
Dr. Yunus was quoted as saying, “There is no alternative to election. If anyone thinks otherwise, that will be profoundly dangerous for the nation.”
During the meetings, National Consensus Commission Vice-President Dr. Ali Riaz and Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Munir Haidar also joined Yunus to discuss progress on finalizing the July Charter and to share political parties’ feedback on its implementation.
The press secretary added that the upcoming Durga Puja was also discussed, with Dr. Yunus urging parties to remain vigilant so that no quarter could exploit the occasion to create instability.
On the Jatiya Party issue, Shafiqul Alam said, “Each party expressed different views. The Chief Adviser listened attentively. The atmosphere was cordial and constructive. Over the past 13 months, this government has maintained dialogue with every political party, and today’s discussions with three parties were particularly warm and friendly.”
Advisory Council members Adilur Rahman Khan, Dr. Asif Nazrul, Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, and Dr. Khalilur Rahman were present at the meetings.
