The Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) has called for “effective action” against the Jatiya Party (JaPa), accusing it of legitimising three “illegal elections” under the then ruling Awami League government.

The demand was made during a meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at his Jamuna residence on Sunday evening.

“The July Charter notes that JaPa legitimised three illegal elections. Election posters of their two current secretaries-general even listed them as Awami League nominees. This shows that the Awami League and the party are essentially the same. For this reason, we have called for effective action,” said Ariful Islam Adib, NCP’s senior joint convener, after the meeting.

NCP highlighted five major points during the talks:Rehabilitation, treatment, and security for injured July fighters.Action against security officials implicated in enforced disappearances over the past 15 years.Constituent Assembly election for drafting a new constitution, as per the July Charter.Concerns over the Election Commission’s impartiality, citing a recent assault at its office.Law and order management and the fair conduct of student parliament elections in universities. The party also urged that citizens turning 18 in February next year be allowed to cast votes in the upcoming national election.

The NCP delegation included Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Coordinator of the Southern Region; Ariful Islam Adib, Senior Joint Convener; Dr. Tasnim Jara, Senior Joint Member Secretary; and Abdul Hannan Masud, Senior Joint Chief Coordinator.

Earlier in the day, Chief Adviser Yunus held talks with Jamaat-e-Islami, and was scheduled to meet BNP leaders later in the evening. The discussions come as political parties remain divided over the election roadmap, after Election Commission announced polls will be held in the first half of February 2026.

The meeting followed a violent clash in Kakrail between supporters and Gono Odhikar Parishad activists. Security forces later intervened, using batons to disperse protesters. Nurul Haque Nur and others sustained injuries in the incident, sparking widespread criticism.

On Saturday, the government issued a statement condemning the attack on Nur. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed that Yunus would meet leaders of BNP, Jamaat, and NCP to address the crisis and election preparations.
