Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for banning of Jatiya Party (JaPa), similar to the ban imposed on Awami League, while reiterating its support for elections under the July Charter framework.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday evening after a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Yunus at his Jamuna residence, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said, “Jatiya Party was an ally of Awami League. Just as a decision was taken regarding the party, a similar step can be taken against JaPa. We conveyed this to the Chief Adviser.”

He further said that a few political groups were obstructing the implementation of July Charter. “Jamaat wants the polls under this Charter. If elections are held before Ramadan, we will have no objection,” he added.

He also stressed that the majority of political parties want elections under proportional representation (PR) system. “Out of 31 parties, 25 want PR. The left-wing parties and Islamic parties also want the system. Since most parties want PR, it has to be done,” he told.

The Jamaat delegation, led by Dr Taher, met the Chief Adviser around 4:15 PM. Other members included Secretary General and former MP Prof Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan, and former MP Dr Hamidur Rahman Azad.
