Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has stated that the interim government must take full responsibility for the recent attack on Nurul Haque Nur, president of the Gono Odhikar Parishad and former VP of DUCSU.

He made the remarks after visiting Nur, who remains under treatment in the ICU at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, on Sunday afternoon.

“The government must own this incident and ensure it is resolved through a proper trial,” Asif said. “Only by holding the perpetrators accountable can we send a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated.”

Asif described the attack as part of a broader attempt to suppress dissent, particularly targeting those who led the July mass uprising.

“There is a push to resurrect the Awami League from within the Jatiya Party. Fascist forces are asserting themselves again — trying to punish those who stood up in July. We want to issue a stern warning to them,” he said.

According to him, a high-level investigation committee has already been formed to identify and bring the attackers to justice.

“We’ve learned that Nur and his organization received threats prior to Friday’s program. The government will investigate who made these threats, and which institutions — even within the state — are enabling fascist actions,” he added.

Asif questioned the narrative that labeled the incident a “mob attack,” calling it a political double standard.

“We need to distinguish between a mob and a political program. How can a registered party’s event be dismissed as mob activity? The attack clearly came from the Jatiya Party,” he said.

He acknowledged that tensions can arise between parties, but warned against bias in interpretation.

“It’s wrong to delegitimize one party while protecting another. That only deepens political instability.”

Asif harshly criticized the Jatiya Party, calling it an “identified fascist force” and accusing it of historically enabling authoritarianism in Bangladesh.

“The Jatiya Party has repeatedly legitimized the Awami League’s authoritarian parliaments. They’ve promoted artificial democracy using external prescriptions — particularly from India,” he claimed.

He concluded with a warning, saying, “Anyone who supports these fascist elements — in any form — must be collectively resisted.”
