BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas on Friday warned that recent acts of vandalism targeting shrines and political party offices should not be dismissed as isolated incidents, cautioning that similar events could intensify in the run-up to the national election.
“A section of people wants the election not to take place. The country is not running through a normal process; it is moving in an abnormal way,” Abbas told reporters after visiting injured former Ducsu VP Nurul Haque Nur at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Calling the attack on Nur “intentional,” he said: “This is not just a scuffle. Blood is still coming out of his nose, his condition is not good. A proper investigation is needed to identify who was involved and why, and they must be brought to justice.”
Abbas also criticised the government for delaying arrangements for Nur’s treatment abroad. “The government should have ensured special treatment in a suitable country. I believe the best care would be in Germany — Singapore or Bangkok will not be effective. We want Nur to recover and return,” he said.
The BNP leader further alleged that planned attacks had been in discussion weeks earlier. “About a month ago, I heard that some people would be attacked deliberately. The government must see where these attacks are coming from. If not, people will think the government has lost control,” he added.
BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr Md Rafiqul Islam, Gono Odhikar Parishad General Secretary Rashed Khan and others accompanied him during the hospital visit.
