United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged world leaders and conflict parties to step up efforts to safeguard education, warning that no child should have to risk their life to learn.

In a message marking the International Day to Protect Education from Attack to be observed on Tuesday (9 September), the UN chief highlighted a dramatic rise in violence against schools and students, noting a 44 percent surge in attacks on educational institutions over the past year.

These assaults, he said, have resulted in the deaths, abductions, and severe trauma of thousands of students and teachers.

“Each violation carries profound consequences — not only for teachers and young learners, but for the future of entire communities and countries,” Guterres stressed.

The secretary-general reiterated the UN’s commitment to ensuring access to safe education, even in the most dangerous contexts, but said global cooperation is essential. He called on governments to invest in resilient education systems and to fully endorse and implement the Safe Schools Declaration.

Guterres also urged all parties in conflict to uphold international law, respect schools as safe spaces, and ensure accountability for those responsible for attacks.

“The pen, the book, and the classroom are all mightier than the sword,” the secretary-general emphasised. “Let’s keep it that way, and protect the fundamental right of every child to learn in safety and peace.”
