The Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep grief over the death of Badruddin Umar, a prominent political thinker, writer, and activist who played a pivotal role in the country’s democratic and intellectual struggles. He passed away in Dhaka on Saturday at the age of 94 after prolonged illness.

In a condolence message, Prof Yunus described Umar as “a shining beacon of our struggle for free thought and progress.” He recalled his contributions as a teacher at Dhaka and Rajshahi universities, his involvement in the Language Movement, and his lifelong commitment to socialist ideals.

The Chief Adviser highlighted Umar’s outspoken resistance against fascism and autocracy, noting his recognition of the July Movement as one of the subcontinent’s most significant popular uprisings.

“Badruddin Umar was not only a theoretician but a fighter who consistently raised his voice against injustice,” Yunus said, adding that the government had nominated him for the Swadhinata Award in recognition of his national contributions.

Describing his death as “an irreparable loss to the nation,” Prof Yunus said Umar’s writings and philosophy would continue to inspire future generations.
Umar, who also served as president of the Jatiya Mukti Council, was widely respected as a progressive intellectual and author.
The Chief Adviser conveyed his sympathy to Umar’s family, colleagues, and admirers.
