Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has raised questions over the quality of Bangladesh’s batting, claiming that only skipper Litton Das stands out as a player of class in their lineup.
Speaking on a podcast uploaded to his YouTube channel on Tuesday, Ashwin was blunt in his assessment.
“Actually, I don’t know what to talk about Bangladesh. They have decent bowlers but in batting I don’t see enough class except Litton Kumar Das,” he said.
Litton, who leads the side in the Asia Cup, has a record of 230 runs in 11 T20Is against India at an average of 20.90 and a strike rate of 149.35—the best strike rate of his career outside Ireland. Bangladesh’s batting fortunes in the tournament are likely to rest heavily on him.
Ashwin also cast doubt on the ability of Bangladesh and other Asian teams to perform under pressure.
“All the other teams for sure have talent but they don’t have the ability to turn up in big games and win,” he remarked.
When asked to name a potential “dark horse” player from Bangladesh, Ashwin picked pacer Taskin Ahmed, adding that he was keen to see how the fast bowler performs.
“Maybe I would pick Taskin Ahmed from Bangladesh, and I would like to see what he does,” he said.
Ashwin, however, was dismissive about the competitiveness of the Asia Cup as a whole, insisting India remain far ahead of their rivals.
“For me, number one to four is India and we can start our discussion from number five. I think the closest number four or five would be Afghanistan or Sri Lanka,” he said.
He further suggested that the only way for another side to beat India would be through extraordinary circumstances.
“The other team have to have an outstanding day not even one percent less and India has to have an ordinary day to lose the series. The only way to defeat India is by somehow restricting them to 155 on a good day and then chasing it down,” Ashwin concluded.
