Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has extended his warm greetings to the Hindu community ahead of the upcoming Sharadiya Durga Puja, calling for peaceful celebrations and urging authorities to ensure adequate security across the country.

In a statement issued on Friday, Dr. Shafiqur said, “On the occasion of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community beginning on 28 September, I convey my heartfelt greetings on behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and myself.”

He praised Bangladesh’s longstanding tradition of communal harmony, saying, “Our beloved homeland is widely recognized as a role model for interfaith unity. For generations, people of all religions; Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, have celebrated their religious festivals peacefully and freely. Such coexistence is rare in the world.”

Dr. Shafiqur cited international recognition of Bangladesh’s interfaith harmony, recalling past statements from global leaders such as former Australian High Commissioner HE Greg Wilcock and European Union Delegation Head William Hanna.

“They praised Bangladesh for its inclusive culture and referred to the country as a ‘moderate Muslim nation’ and a rare example of communal unity,” he said.

He emphasized that religious festivals in Bangladesh often turn into national celebrations that transcend communal lines.

“These gatherings become festivals of all people, bringing everyone together and this unity elevates our nation’s image globally,” he noted.

Calling for full support from all quarters, Jamaat chief appealed to law enforcement agencies to ensure uninterrupted and safe observance of Durga Puja.

He also urged his party members and peace-loving citizens across the country to assist in facilitating the festival in every possible way.

“Durga Puja should further strengthen the bond of tolerance and harmony in our national life. I pray for peace, prosperity and well-being of all communities in Bangladesh,” he added, stressing that mutual respect, empathy and love are core values of the nation’s culture.

Dr. Shafiqur concluded by urging all to preserve the tradition of communal harmony and make this year’s Durga Puja a peaceful and joyous celebration for everyone.
