Information Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam has admitted that he has spent the past two months in a state of uncertainty, unsure of when he may be asked to leave his position, as political parties continue pressing for the resignation of student representative advisers.

Speaking at a dialogue on “Media Self-Regulation and Complaint Mechanisms: Political and Policy Perspectives” at the Cirdap auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday, Mahfuj described the situation as deeply unsettling.

“For the past two months, I have been living with the question of when I might have to step down. I still do not know when that will happen,” he said.

Mahfuj, who played a central role in last year’s July Uprising, urged political parties to work with, rather than against, those currently serving in advisory positions. “Political parties should think about how they can cooperate with us instead of creating barriers, so we can fulfill our responsibilities,” he noted.

He added that since May, slogans demanding the removal of student advisers have echoed outside his official residence, underscoring the political pressure surrounding his position.

Turning to the media sector, Mahfuj highlighted the slow progress of the draft journalism protection bill. He explained that the legislation requires 18 procedural steps before enactment, yet despite his directive to start the process two months ago, it has stalled at the second stage.

Still, he expressed hope the law will be passed within the tenure of the interim administration.

Reflecting on the broader challenges of governance, Mahfuj said that while many advisers who joined last August are still adjusting to their roles, his own tenure began under the shadow of possible resignation from the very next day.
