Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) or Tariff Commission has recommended fixing the maximum retail price of hilsa according to its size.

This government agency has made this recommendation due to the abnormal price increase in the local market. The Tariff Commission has published the report on hilsha price on Sunday.

The Tariff Commission has completed this survey based on the instability seen in the market due to the abnormally high price of hilsa recently. The Tariff Commission has said that the price of hilsa per kg has increased to Tk 2,200 in September.

In this regard, Tariff Commission Chairman Mainul Khan said, “Now one kg of hilsa fish to be bought for the price of three kg of beef. Once, three kg of hilsa fish could be bought for one kg of beef. The hilsa price has abnormally increased.”

Therefore, the price needs to be fixed at the retail level. This will not cause losses to marginal fishermen.”
According to Mainul Khan, although hilsa is almost 100 per cent domestic product, there is an artificial connection behind its price in the market.
Because, its extraction is not much affected by international trade or dollar fluctuations. The main point identified in the study is the various levels of post-extraction middlemen and their excess profits. Basically, the manipulation of Dadan traders is playing a major role behind the price increase.
