A Dhaka court on Tuesday rejected the passport return plea of model Meghna Alam, Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020, in a case filed with Dhanmondi police station over alleged fraud and extortion.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman rejected the plea after a hearing.

On the day, advocates Mohsim Reza and Mohima Badhon appeared in the court on behalf of Meghna Alam, requesting the return of her passport.

Advocate Mohima Badhon said, “Our client is a human rights activist and needs to travel abroad. We requested her passport be returned and assured the court she would not abscond. The court, however, rejected our plea.” After the hearing, Meghna Alam broke down while speaking to the media.

“The prosecution keeps making false accusations and humiliating me in public. How can we get justice if they continue spreading lies in court?” she said.

According to the case statement, Meghna, Samir, and two to three unidentified individuals are allegedly involved in an organised fraud ring.

Dewan Samir has been identified as the CEO of Kawaii Group and the owner of the manpower agency Sanjana International.

They allegedly used “attractive” women to lure diplomats, foreign mission representatives, and local businessmen into illicit relationships, and then extorted money by threatening to ruin their reputations.

Model Meghna was arrested from her flat in the capital’s Vatara area on 9 April 2025 and later placed under a 30-day detention order under the Special Powers Act.

However, on 13 April, the High Court issued a rule directing the authorities to explain within two weeks why the detention order should not be declared illegal.

On 17 April, a Dhaka court recorded Meghna’s arrest in the case. She was later granted bail on 28 April and released from jail the following day.
