Bangladesh has strongly condemned the interception of the ‘Global Sumud Flotilla’ by Israeli forces in international waters, calling it a blatant violation of international law and a stark example of the use of hunger as a weapon of war.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the flotilla, which was carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, was targeted by Israeli occupying forces despite its peaceful mission.
Describing the flotilla as the largest yet in efforts to break the blockade on Gaza, the ministry said its interception comes amid growing global criticism of Israel’s military actions, which have devastated large parts of the territory and claimed tens of thousands of lives.
Dhaka called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained humanitarian workers and activists, ensuring their safety and well-being.
The statement also urged Israel to end its illegal occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, respect international humanitarian law and immediately cease its military operations and blockade, which Bangladesh described as “genocidal.”
“The humanitarian flotilla is a symbol of global solidarity with the Palestinian people,” the ministry said, adding that Israel must allow unhindered access to aid for Gaza’s civilian population, who continue to be denied their fundamental rights to life, dignity and livelihood.
Reaffirming its firm position, the government said, “The people and government of Bangladesh stand in unwavering solidarity with the people of Palestine in this hour of grave distress.”
According to AP reports, Israeli authorities deployed hundreds of police officers to the port of Ashdod on Thursday to process around 450 detained international activists, including European lawmakers, who were aboard the flotilla.
The interception has sparked global outrage and protests.
