Bangladesh were bowled out for 178 runs in 49.4 overs, setting England a target of 179 in their second match of the ICC Women’s World Cup at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Middle-order batter Sobhana Mostary led the resistance with a fighting 60, while tail-ender Rabeya Khan provided a quickfire cameo of 43 off 27 balls to add some late momentum against the top-class English bowling attack.

Mostary’s innings was also a milestone for Bangladesh, making her the third Bangladeshi woman to score a half-century in the World Cup and marking her maiden fifty in international cricket.

Earlier, opener Rubya Haider fell for 4, edging a delivery from Lauren Bell to Sophia Dunkley at mid-off, leaving Bangladesh at 24-1.

Skipper Nigar Sultana was dismissed for a duck soon after by Smith, reducing the team to 25-2 and leaving Bangladesh struggling for momentum.

Sharmin Akhter tried to stabilize the innings with 30 off 52 balls but was caught behind off Sophia Ecclestone shortly after the drinks break, taking the score to 59-3.

Shorna Akter’s 10 and Ritu Moni’s 5 added small contributions before being dismissed. Fahima Khatun, 7 and Nahida Akter, 1, fell cheaply to Sophie Ecclestone, who claimed a three-wicket haul, reducing Bangladesh to 130-7.

Mostary’s determined 60 runs helped Bangladesh reach 156-8 before she was trapped lbw by Capsey in the 47th over.

Rabeya Khan’s rapid 43 off 27 balls added vital late runs, but wickets continued to tumble, with Sanjida Akter Meghla, 1, dismissed in the final over, leaving Bangladesh all out for 178.

England now face a target of 179, setting the stage for an exciting chase as both teams look to secure an important win early in the World Cup campaign.
