The Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain has said that the interim advisers cannot avoid accountability merely by transferring power.
Speaking to reporters at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Chattar near Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur on Saturday, he insisted that the advisers must fully carry out the responsibilities entrusted to them through the people’s uprising to earn a “safe exit.”

Akhtar said, “The advisers appear eager to leave after handing over power. But they must change this mindset. They owe the people a complete and transparent implementation of their mandate. Simply handing over power will not absolve them of responsibility.”

He said the NCP has already completed all procedures required for registration ahead of the upcoming national elections. “We have not held alliance talks with any political party yet. However, if a coalition becomes necessary in the interest of the nation and its people, we are open to considering it from an ideological standpoint,” he added.

Regarding the July Charter, Akhtar said the government has assured that the document will be given legal status. “The government and the National Consensus Commission have informed us that a referendum will empower Parliament to incorporate it into the Constitution. The NCP will participate in the signing ceremony to uphold the achievements of the July Charter,” he said.

He urged the government to avoid one-sided decisions like those made during the July Declaration and to ensure that the implementation of the July Charter reflects the genuine aspirations of the people.

Akhtar emphasized that visible progress in judicial reforms and ensuring neutrality of the field administration are essential before the general elections. “Without these steps, the spirit of a fair and festive election will remain out of reach. The government must make its election preparations acceptable to all pro-democracy forces and to the people,” he noted.

He also demanded the arrest of senior officials from the Army, DGFI, and RAB allegedly involved in killings, enforced disappearances, and illegal detentions during the previous regime. “Many are already facing trial in the International Crimes Tribunal, but those who remain outside must also be brought to justice,” Akhtar said.

NCP Rangpur District Convener Asadullah Al Galib, Joint Conveners Alamgir Nayon and Alal Uddin Kaderi Shanti, among others, were present. Earlier, Akhtar visited the grave of late BNP leader Anisur Rahman Laku at Chhoto Nurpur graveyard, met his family, and later attended a reception at Nabdigonj Bazar in Pirgachha.
