Students of the seven Dhaka University-affiliated government colleges have temporarily suspended their ongoing movement demanding the swift finalisation and issuance of the Dhaka Central University Act–2025.

Mohammad Naeem Howlader, a member of the government seven colleges university conversion movement, said that nearly 80% of the work on drafting the ordinance has been completed. “The remaining work is expected to be finished soon, after which the ordinance will be officially issued. For now, the protest is suspended,” he added.

The announcement came after a meeting with the Education Adviser and relevant officials at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

Howlader explained that the draft ordinance is currently in its second phase, which is the most time-consuming part of the process. Once this phase is completed, the ordinance will be nearly ready for Cabinet approval.

He noted that around 6,000 emails related to the ordinance have been submitted and are being meticulously verified and documented. Initially, only two officials handled this task, but due to the workload, five officials are now assigned.

Consultations with teachers, students, and political organizations are expected to be completed within the next three to four days, after which the subsequent steps will proceed. Officials indicated that each step could be completed within four days.

Howlader urged students to remain patient and maintain peace, assuring them that progress is being made. He also expressed concern over injuries sustained by some students during the protest, calling for investigations into the incidents, including one student who required stitches and another who underwent a CT scan at Dhaka Medical College.

Earlier in the day, a 23-member delegation of students from the seven colleges visited the Secretariat to discuss the urgent finalization of the ordinance and its issuance.
