BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed have attended the July National Charter 2025 signing ceremony.

The BNP leaders arrived at the National Consensus Commission office in the LD Hall of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Friday (17 October) afternoon, confirmed the party’s media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan.

The signing ceremony of the July National Charter began at the Jatiya Sangsad premises on Friday afternoon.

Although there ceremony was scheduled to begin at 4pm, the event was delayed due to inclement weather.  The ceremony began with the playing of the National Anthem. Representatives of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and other political parties are present at the event.

Responding to journalists’ questions about the prevailing situation surrounding the signing of the July Charter, BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan described the developments as “completely undesirable.”

Replying to reporters, Moyeen said, “If you ask me in today’s context, I must say that the current situation is entirely unfortunate. It is natural that not everyone will fully agree on the July document — expecting all 180 million people of Bangladesh to suddenly agree on everything would be unrealistic. Frankly speaking, that would take us back to a one-party system like BAKSAL.”

He questioned whether the July Charter could hold any real significance without the participation of those who led the July movement.

“We must also ask why we could not agree on some fundamental issues, or why we allowed the discussions to stray far from their focal points,” he added.

The long-debated July Charter is set to be signed on Friday afternoon, a move the interim government hails as a ‘turning point in the nation’s history’.

Ahead of the event, the Chief Adviser’s press wing on Thursday announced a ban on drone activity in the parliament area during the event, urging all parties to comply with the security measures.

Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, along with representatives from various political parties, is scheduled to attend the ceremony.

The signing ceremony of the historic July Charter is expected to begin a few minutes later than scheduled because of adverse weather conditions.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam confirmed the development in a Facebook post at 2:58pm on Friday, stating that all preparations are complete and guests have already started arriving at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building.

The event was originally set to start at 4pm. The programme will open with the national anthem and a tribute to the martyrs, followed by a welcome address from National Consensus Commission Vice-President Professor Ali Riaz. Representatives of political parties and commission members will then sign the charter, with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus signing last.

A short documentary outlining the background of the July Charter will be screened before the ceremony officially begins. The event marks a symbolic political milestone.
