The Chittagong Port Authority has suspended the recently increased toll on vehicles entering the port, allowing goods vehicles to continue paying the previous fee.
Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruk announced the decision on Sunday afternoon during a meeting with transport owners and labor representatives at the port building.
The increase had led to trucks, lorries, trailers, and covered vans halting operations at the port since Saturday, disrupting the delivery of imported goods and affecting the country’s import-export activities. To resolve the issue, discussions were held with the port chairman, transport owners, and workers.
“The port administration cannot immediately revoke a government-approved gazette,” said Faruk. “However, considering the concerns of transport workers, the increased gate pass fee will remain suspended until a final decision is made. A proposal with recommendations will be submitted to the ministry after board approval.”
Representatives from the Bangladesh Covered Van Truck Prime Mover Goods Transport Owners Association confirmed that the port chairman agreed to suspend the new toll. Trucks and covered vans will now pay the original fee of Tk 57.50 instead of the increased Tk 230.
With the suspension in place, approximately 6,000 trucks and vans waiting outside the port can now resume transporting goods, ensuring smoother import and export operations.
