On Sunday, Nahid Islam, a former advisor to the interim government, wrote on his verified Facebook page, “The so-called proportional representation (PR) movement initiated by Jamaat-e-Islami was, in fact, a calculated political ploy. It was deliberately designed to sabotage the reform process of the Consensus Commission.”
He further wrote, “The original reform demand for establishing an upper house based on proportional representation was meant as a constitutional safeguard. We aimed to build a movement based on fundamental reforms and to establish a legal framework for the July Charter through broad national consensus. But Jamaat and its allies hijacked this agenda and reduced it to a narrow issue of PR.”
Nahid also stated, “Jamaat-e-Islami never participated in any reform discussions—neither before nor after the July uprising. They presented no constructive proposals, offered no constitutional perspective, and never even demonstrated any commitment to a democratic republic.”
In response to Nahid’s statements, Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair said in his statement, “In the discussions of the Consensus Commission and on the streets, Jamaat-e-Islami has presented its strong stance in support of giving the July National Charter a legal foundation. Therefore, Nahid’s comments have no logical basis. We urge him to refrain from making such misleading statements.”
