A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Srisant Roy to jail in a case filed under the Cyber Security Act for allegedly making obscene and threatening remarks about women on social media.

Police said Srisant had been posting derogatory comments about women, including Muslim women’s attire, on Reddit and other platforms. Investigators are verifying screenshots of his posts and will soon submit a report to the court.

Tension erupted on the BUET campus on late Tuesday night after screenshots of his comments went viral. Hundreds of students staged a protest demanding action, prompting the university administration to suspend Srisant temporarily around 1 AM, according to BUET’s Directorate of Students’ Welfare.

Officials confirmed that legal proceedings are underway against the accused student, who allegedly boasted online about sexually assaulting a Muslim female peer while under the influence of drugs.
