Bangladeshi-origin US citizen Enayet Karim Chowdhury has once again been denied bail; this time by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, just days after the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court rejected his previous bail plea.

Karim was arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act in a case filed with Ramna Model Police Station, accusing him of conspiring to overthrow the interim government.

On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Foyez rejected his bail petition following a hearing.

Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqui confirmed the decision, saying the court came to its conclusion after hearing arguments from both sides.
According to the case statement, Enayet Karim, who migrated to the United States in 1988 and obtained US citizenship in 2004, returned to Bangladesh from New York on September 6.

Police allege that he was collaborating with foreign intelligence agencies to destabilize the country.
He was detained on September 13 while driving a Prado SUV around Minto Road in a manner police described as “suspicious.”

Officers claimed he failed to explain his presence in the area, leading to his arrest and the seizure of two iPhones.
Since then, Detective Branch (DB) has interrogated Karim in remand three times.

His alleged associates; SM Golam Mostafa Azad, Jatiya Party (Raushan-led) Secretary General Kazi Md Mamunur Rashid and Jubo Sanghoti Central Joint Secretary Rifatul Islam Pavel, have also been questioned in connection with the same case.
