A gun attack during an election campaign in Chattogram left BNP-nominated Chattogram-8 candidate Ershad Ullah injured and an individual dead on Wednesday.
The incident took place around 6 PM in Chailatali area under Bayezid Bostami Police Station when unidentified assailants opened fire on a campaign gathering for Ershad Ullah, who is also the convener of Chattogram city BNP.
The deceased has been identified as Sarwar Babla, who was reportedly shot point-blank in the chest by two assailants. Witnesses said chaos broke out as people ran for cover, during which Ershad Ullah was shot in the leg.
The injured BNP candidate was rushed to Evercare Hospital, where doctors said he is out of danger. Police officials and senior officers rushed to the scene following the shooting. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack may be linked to a local gang feud.
According to a police source, the shooting was allegedly carried out by associates of “Chhoto Sajjad,” a notorious gangster currently in jail, who may have targeted Sarwar Babla over a prior dispute.
Confirming the incident, Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Amirul Islam said, “We have received reports of gunfire at Ershad Ullah’s campaign. A police team is on the scene, and an investigation is underway.”
