The Supreme Court (SC) has asked Bangladesh Army to strengthen security around the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) ahead of Monday’s verdict against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two of her former top aides.
SC spokesperson Moajjem Hussain confirmed that the letter was sent to Army Headquarters on Sunday.
He added that a similar request had already been issued last Thursday, shortly after the tribunal announced the date for delivering the verdict.
The ICT-1 is set to hand down its judgment tomorrow in the case linked to alleged atrocities committed during last year’s July uprising. The proceedings have drawn intense national and international attention due to the political sensitivity and unprecedented nature of the charges.
Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim told reporters on Sunday that a portion of judgment read out in open court is expected to be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV), with private channels allowed to relay the feed pending final approval.
He clarified that only the sections formally read by the tribunal will be aired.
The ICT-1 formally fixed November 17 for the verdict on Thursday, setting the stage for one of the most consequential rulings in the tribunal’s history.
