BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday described the verdict against deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as a “burial of all forms of dictatorship” in Bangladesh.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Fakhrul said the ruling delivered by International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) signalled more than a conviction.

“We believe today’s verdict is not only a judgment on Sheikh Hasina’s crimes, but marks the end of all forms of dictatorship in this country,” he wrote.

Earlier in the day, ICT-1 found Sheikh Hasina and two others guilty in a case concerning crimes against humanity during last year’s July–August uprising, which left more than 1,000 people dead.

The tribunal sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Kamal to death.

Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified as a state witness, received a five-year prison sentence.

The court also ordered that the properties of Sheikh Hasina and Kamal be confiscated by the state.
