89 BNP Leaders Petition Tarique Rahman to Replace Candidate in Jashore-1

A total of 89 senior leaders from Sharsha Upazila BNP, Benapole Municipal BNP, and affiliated bodies have submitted a formal petition to BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, requesting the withdrawal of the party’s nominated candidate, reformist leader Mofikul Hasan Tripti, for Jashore-1 (Sharsha) constituency.

The appeal was filed on Sunday (16 November).

The application, signed by Sharsha Upazila BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Mostafa Kamal Mintu, urges the party high command to review and reconsider the nomination in Jashore-1, claiming widespread dissatisfaction among grassroots activists. Speaking to reporters, Mintu said, “We submitted an application signed by 89 leaders. The candidate whose name has been announced has no connection with the party’s grassroots or local people. Around 80 percent of leaders, activists, and general voters in this constituency are frustrated and angered by his nomination. For the past 17 years, he has never stood by party workers during crises, nor has he played any role in movements or legal struggles. It will be extremely difficult to mobilize activists in his support.”

He added that they had no preferred candidate, but wanted someone who maintains communication with local leaders.
“Anyone who stays connected with the grassroots should be nominated—we will work for that person,” he said.
The leaders also warned that defeating the Jamaat-backed candidate would be impossible with Tripti as the nominee.

During the 1/11 political crisis, former BNP assistant office secretary Mofikul Hasan Tripti allegedly played a leading role in attempts to weaken BNP and the family of its founder, the late President Ziaur Rahman.
The petition claims that, under Tripti’s instruction, BNP leaders in Sharsha were harassed, tortured, and jailed through false cases.Tripti is also accused of cooperating with DGFI during 1/11, which allegedly contributed to filing false cases and subjecting Tarique Rahman to physical abuse. In the 2008 national election, Tripti reportedly acted against the BNP-led four-party alliance by indirectly supporting the Awami League candidate. From 2008 to 2024, the petition states, Tripti played no role in movements or organizational activities in Sharsha, spending around 16 years in Dhaka and remaining absent during the most difficult periods for BNP workers.Although reinstated in 2017 after the withdrawal of an expulsion order, he allegedly did not engage in party activities.Despite receiving BNP’s nomination in the 2018 general election, Tripti was largely absent from the constituency, visiting the area for only a few hours under pressure from local activists.
During this period, BNP workers faced mass arrests and attacks, but he reportedly did not provide any support. The petition further alleges that Tripti maintained cordial ties with former Awami League MP Sheikh Afil Uddin, which is why he never faced legal action during Awami League rule.Local leaders claim he now operates politically with Awami League-backed “identified criminals,” resulting in frequent attacks, lawsuits, and harassment against BNP workers.

Benapole Municipal Jubo Dal convener Mofizur Rahman Babu said that most local BNP leaders and supporters strongly demand a reconsideration of the nomination for the upcoming 2026 national election.
He urged the party to select a candidate from among those who endured repression, led the organization during hard times, and remained loyal to BNP’s movement.

On 3 November, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the party’s primary list of candidates for the 13th National Parliamentary Election. On that day, former BNP central assistant office secretary Mofikul Hasan Tripti was nominated for Jashore-1 (Sharsha).
