A court in Dhaka on Tuesday sent Dhaka University Deputy Registrar Muhammad Lavlu Molla Shishir to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly financing a procession organised by the banned Chhatra League.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia passed the order after the police produced the accused before the court.

Shahbagh police station Sub-Inspector Al Amin, also the investigating officer of the case, filed a petition seeking the DU official’s detention, while the defence pleaded for his bail.

After hearing both petitions, the court ordered to send Lavlu to jail, rejecting the bail plea.

Earlier, students of Dhaka University handed over the deputy registrar to the police after he allegedly posted a defamatory Facebook status following the International Crimes Tribunal’s death sentence verdict against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Lavlu was apprehended from his residence near midnight on Monday with the help of the university’s proctorial team and later taken to Shahbagh Police Station, where he was sued in the case on Tuesday.

According to the police, Lavlu posted a photocard on Facebook on Monday night featuring Sheikh Hasina’s image with the caption: “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu, I don’t care.”

The post quickly triggered outrage among DU students. Several of them then went to Lavlu’s home and escorted him to the police station with proctorial assistance.

The police said Lavlu was taken into custody for initial questioning after the post was deemed disrespectful to the tribunal.

Md Khalid Mansur, officer-in-charge of the police station, said they have already found evidence against Lavlu for funding a procession brought out by activists of the banned Chhatra League. He was later arrested in the case, the OC said.

DU sources said that after last year’s July movement, five officials and employees known for their support towards the Chhatra League continued to work in the administrative building. Among them was Lavlu Molla, a former president of Masterda Surya Sen Hall unit Chhatra League during his student years. He also reportedly opposed students during the July uprising.

The ICT-1 on Monday sentenced Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and jailed former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun for five years, in a crimes against humanity case linked to last year’s July mass uprising.
