Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser (NSA) and High Representative for the Rohingya Issue, Dr Khalilur Rahman, met his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval in New Delhi on Wednesday, where the two discussed key bilateral matters and ongoing work under the Colombo Security Conclave (CSC).
The meeting came amid Dhaka’s renewed request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Officials, however, did not confirm whether the issue was raised during the bilateral talks.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said Dr Rahman may bring it up if necessary but noted that extradition matters would proceed through official channels.
Dr Rahman invited Doval to visit Bangladesh at a convenient time. He is leading Bangladesh’s delegation to the seventh NSA-level CSC meeting, where India is hosting representatives from member states including Bangladesh, the Maldives, Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Seychelles is attending as an observer, while Malaysia has joined as a guest.
Bangladesh became the fifth full member of the CSC in 2024. The grouping focuses on regional cooperation in five key areas: maritime security, counterterrorism and de-radicalisation, combating transnational crime and trafficking, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
The interim government said the NSA’s participation reflects its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation. Bangladesh has recently stepped up engagement with regional bodies, including assuming the chairmanship of BIMSTEC under Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and seeking to revive SAARC.
Before travelling to New Delhi, Dr Rahman also led a Bangladesh delegation to the China–Indian Ocean Region Forum in Kunming, China.
