BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan has said that the party has recommended the Election Commission (EC) to appoint its own officials as returning officers for the 13th National Parliamentary Election, emphasizing that such a move would bring qualitative change to the country’s political landscape.

Speaking at a dialogue organised by the EC at the Election Bhaban on Wednesday, he said that the party welcomed the dialogue process and reaffirmed its commitment to conduct the election according to established rules and code of conduct.

Moyeen stated, “This is not a new suggestion. We cannot claim absolute success or failure from previous discussions, but we welcome the ongoing dialogue. Candidates from all parties must follow the rules and regulations. Deviating from the schedule is not an option, and our advice has not yet been fully reflected.”

Highlighting concerns about compliance, he added, “No matter how many pledges are made, they are meaningless without self-discipline. Clear punitive measures are needed; otherwise, the tendency to violate rules will increase. The process should be as simple as possible.”

On the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI), he said, “We will act responsibly regarding misinformation. While freedom of speech is vital, its misuse is inevitable. We hope the commission and all candidates will exercise responsibility in this new era of communication.”

Moyeen emphasized the crucial role of the EC during the country’s critical period, urging maximum utilization of its personnel. “We demand that returning officers and assistant returning officers be drawn from the commission’s own officials. This will enhance the quality of politics in Bangladesh.”

He also urged like-minded parties to work collectively toward a fair election, adding, “The EC must remain strong. The constitution grants you authority; there is no reason to bow down. Religion must not be used for political purposes.”

The dialogue was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin and attended by other election commissioners, EC officials, and representatives from various political parties.
