Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman said on Thursday that although the non-partisan caretaker government system has been reinstated, its final structure; whether it follows the earlier model or the July Charter draft, will be determined by the next parliament.
“With the caretaker system restored, citizens will once again be able to cast their own votes. Elections will be held in daylight, not at night and no deceased person will be able to vote. The country has returned to the highway of democracy,” he said.
He also criticized former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque, saying Haque had “dug the grave of democracy” by abolishing the system in the first place.
A seven-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the verdict on Thursday, reinstating the caretaker government system to be applied from 14th parliamentary election onward.
In its short order, the court unanimously granted all related appeals and civil review petitions.
It also declared the earlier Appellate Division verdict issued under former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque to be flawed and tarnished and therefore fully overturned it.
