HC upholds death sentences in major Sinha murder case

The High Court has upheld the death sentences of former Teknaf Police Station officer-in-charge Pradip Kumar Das and Inspector Liakat Ali in the high-profile murder case of retired Army major M Rashed Khan Sinha.
The court also maintained life imprisonment for six other convicts.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday by a bench comprising Justice M Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Md. Sagir Hossain. The convicts now have 30 days to file an appeal against the High Court ruling.

Earlier, on June 2 this year, the High Court had confirmed the death sentences of Pradip and Liakat and upheld life imprisonment for six others, alongside a Tk 50,000 fine for each convict.

The six convicts serving life sentences are former SI Nanddulal Rakhit, Constable Rubel Sharma, Sagar Dev, Md. Nurul Amin, Md. Aiyaz, and Md. Nizam Uddin.

The case dates back to July 31, 2020, when major (retd.) M Rashed Khan Sinha was shot dead at Shamlapur Toll Plaza on the Cox’s Bazar–Teknaf Marine Drive by then Inspector Liakat Ali. Five days later, Sinha’s sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, filed a murder case in court. The RAB submitted a charge sheet on December13, 2020, accusing 15 people and describing the murder as preplanned.

On January 31, 2022, the Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail sentenced OC Pradip and Inspector Liakat to death, while six others received life imprisonment. Seven additional accused were acquitted. Following a death reference, the High Court confirmed the sentences, after which the convicts filed appeals.
The case has drawn widespread national attention due to the involvement of senior law enforcement officials and the brutality of the crime.
