Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin has reiterated that the Election Commission’s sole responsibility is to ensure free, fair and acceptable elections.

He made the remarks at a workshop titled “Building Bridges: Regional Electoral Governance and Citizen Observation Exchange” organized by Asian Network for Free Elections at Hotel Lakeshore Heights in Dhaka on Saturday.

The CEC stressed that upholding the rule of law is essential for conducting credible elections and expressed confidence that the commission can fulfill its commitments to the nation and the international community.

He highlighted the support of the government and political parties, saying their shared commitment to fair elections is an added advantage.

Observers and journalists, he noted, will act as “CC cameras” to monitor the process, ensuring transparency and participation.

He urged all stakeholders to act responsibly and maturely.

On the upcoming referendum, the CEC said the law will be enacted next week, outlining procedures for citizens to vote ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ on the four questions.

He also discussed efforts to simplify IT-supported postal voting for expatriate Bangladeshis.

Addressing technological challenges, including AI, the CEC warned that while technological advancement is beneficial, it can also be misused by malicious actors to disrupt the electoral process, calling it a “major headache” for the commission.
