Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam became the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in Test cricket, surpassing Shakib Al Hasan during Day 4 of the second and final Test against Ireland on Saturday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The landmark looked inevitable after Taijul equaled Shakib’s tally by claiming 4-76 in Ireland’s first innings. His effort helped Bangladesh, which posted 476 all out, bowl out the visitors for 265 to secure a massive 211-run lead.

Bangladesh later declared their second innings at 297-4, setting Ireland an improbable 509-run target for victory.

Taijul moved past Shakib in the sixth over of Ireland’s chase, trapping captain Andy Balbirnie leg-before for 13. He then dismissed Paul Stirling to take his tally to 248 wickets and counting.

Shakib reached his mark of 246 wickets in 71 Tests, a milestone Taijul eclipsed in just 57 matches. ”BSS
