A Dhaka court has discharged commerce adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin from the case filed over the killing of Md Sohan Shah, an executive mechanical engineer at Virgo Garments, during the July mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam approved the discharge on Tuesday following a petition from the investigation officer, confirmed DMP Prosecution Deputy Commissioner Mia Mohammad Ashis bin Hasan.
On 24 November, the investigating officer, RAB-3 SI Md. Mostafizur Rahman, submitted an interim report under Section 173(1)(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The report stated that no evidence was found linking Bashir Uddin to the incident and recommended that he be released from the case.
Sohan Shah, 30, was shot and injured on 19 July near a CNG station in Rampura during the July Movement. He died on 28 August while undergoing treatment.
His mother, Sufia Begum, filed the case on 19 September against 57 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Bashir Uddin was listed as 49th accused in the case and identified as an Awami League leader. The 48th accused was former Jashore-1 MP Sheikh Afil Uddin Bhuiyan, with both men shown to share the same father’s name and address.
Other notable accused in the case include Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former minister and JASAD president Hasanul Haq Inu, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB chief Harunur Rashid and AL Office Secretary Biplab Barua.
