Korail slum fire fully extinguished after 16hrs; probe body formed

A massive fire that broke out in the Korail slum in the capital’s Tejgaon area was fully doused after 16 hours of strenuous efforts of the Fire Service.

Md Shahjahan Sikder, assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD), Headquarters, confirmed this to media around 9:30AM on Wednesday.

Around 1,500 tin-roofed shanties were burnt in the blaze. So far, no casualties have been reported.
Fire Service Director (Operation and Maintenance) Lt Col Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury said, three units from different stations reached the spot 35 minutes after the fire originated, mainly due to severe traffic congestion on the roads. Later more units arrived but the vehicles could not enter because of the narrow lanes.”
”Before our arrival at the spot, the fire had reached the development stage, which was harder for us to contain.”
Fire fighter were battling to contain the blaze due to severe water shortages and heavy traffic delays. The fire originated at about 5:22PM.
Meanwhile, a five-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the reason behind the fire.
”The financial losses and total destruction will be confirmed after an investigation,” saidTajul Islam.
