Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal is expected to be the first Awami League leader to face extradition, as India reviews Bangladesh’s plea to bring back Sheikh Hasina, said Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

He made the remarks in a post from his verified Facebook account on Friday.
In the post, Shafiqul Alam wrote that he believes Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and the top leadership of the Awami League—accused over the July incidents—will one day face trial in Bangladeshi courts. India, he said, is already examining the request for Hasina’s extradition.

The press secretary added that despite having powerful supporters, he increasingly believes Kamal—known as the Butcher of Dhaka—will soon be extradited to Bangladesh to face justice. He said that more attention is being drawn to the crimes committed during Hasina’s nearly 16 years in power, and global media will continue to highlight Kamal’s alleged role in killings and enforced disappearances.

Shafiqul Alam further wrote that no matter how much money Kamal or other Awami League leaders spend, they cannot evade responsibility forever. If the nation remains steadfast in seeking justice for the victims of the July massacre and other human rights violations committed during Hasina’s tenure, it will become increasingly difficult for those responsible to escape consequences. “It will begin with Kamal, and then one by one…,” he concluded.
