Bhola residents living in Dhaka blockaded the Shahbagh intersection on Friday afternoon, demanding urgent government action on five key development issues, led by the long-delayed Bhola–Barisal bridge.
The protest, which began around midday, brought traffic to a standstill in one of the capital’s busiest areas, causing major disruptions for commuters, emergency services, and patients heading to nearby hospitals.
Protesters in Bhola have submitted a five-point demand charter calling for the immediate construction of the Bhola–Barisal bridge, establishment of a medical and a public university, provision of natural gas connections, and accelerated infrastructure development across the district.
“The bridge is our main demand, and it has the unanimous support of the people of Bhola,” said a protester. “It will revolutionize connectivity, boost the local economy, and end our isolation.”
Another participant added, “We’ve been ignored for too long. We’re on the streets because we want action, not promises.”
Organisers said thousands took part in the rally, many holding banners and festoons with slogans like “Build the Bridge Now!” and “Bhola Deserves Development.” They noted that smaller protests have been held over the past several days, but Friday’s gathering was the largest yet.
The proposed Bhola–Barisal bridge is widely seen as a transformative project that would link the mainland with Bhola, the country’s largest island, dramatically improving transport, trade, education, and healthcare access for millions.
