The family of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is preparing to take her to London for advanced medical treatment, contingent on improvements in her current health condition.

The development was confirmed on Saturday through a Facebook post by Mahdi Amin, Adviser to BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

Mahdi wrote that efforts are already underway to arrange a special air ambulance equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities to ensure a safe transfer for the ailing former prime minister.

He added that Tarique Rahman and his wife have been in contact with the London hospital where Khaleda underwent treatment earlier this year and made significant progress during her four-month stay. Discussions with the foreign medical team responsible for her previous recovery have reportedly resumed.

Meanwhile, Nagorik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, who visited Khaleda Zia at Evercare Hospital in the capital earlier on Saturday, confirmed that preparatory arrangements for her possible medical evacuation have been put in place. However, he stressed that her physical condition has not yet stabilised sufficiently for air travel.

Speaking to reporters after his hospital visit, Manna said Khaleda’s doctors believe she will reach the required level of stability soon, but immediate travel is not possible. “She cannot be flown abroad right now, but her physicians are optimistic that her condition will improve soon,” he said.

Manna also noted that multiple overseas treatment options—particularly in Singapore and several European countries—have been shortlisted as alternatives. However, he emphasised that no final decision has been taken by the family or the medical board.

Expressing hope for her recovery, Manna said he believes the former prime minister will “regain her health and return home safely.”
Khaleda Zia, 80, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on 23 November following the advice of her medical board after being diagnosed with infections in both her heart and lungs. She has since also developed pneumonia and is currently being treated in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) under the close supervision of a combined team of local and overseas specialists.

The BNP chief has been suffering from a range of chronic health complications for several years, including cardiovascular disease, liver and kidney disorders, diabetes, lung ailments, arthritis and various ophthalmic conditions. She has a permanent pacemaker and previously underwent stenting due to cardiac complications.

Hospital sources confirmed on Friday night that her kidney functions have deteriorated, prompting heightened concern among her doctors and family members.
